Getting around Bangkok, or Thailand for that matter, doesn’t need to be expensive. In fact, we think it is super cheap and easy to do on a budget. However, there are some things you need to know first, particularly about taxis and tuk tuks, and the scams involving them.
The year 2016 was a busy one! We managed 4500 sea miles, 603km by train, 14700km by plane and 3115km by automobiles (including 1065km on scooters!) Have a look at our journey in photos!

There is a profusion of things to see and do, in and around, the Chiang Mai area in Northern Thailand. During the time we spent there we really only scratched the surface of this interesting cultural destination…… Pai is as touristy as a place can get and still be full of character and culture. This quirky town is full of backpackers, hippies and tree-huggers……. Our next overnight stop was at Mae Hong Son. We left Pai early in the morning and rode through the mist covered mountains. It was beautiful… but very cold!…… Back in Chiang Mai it was time to visit the markets….
We went snorkelling and diving with our favourite dive buddies, the Vonic family. Ilija and Anka have their open water dive ticket and their son Nikola has just done his dive course. Their younger son, Luka, not yet a diver, and I, never to be a diver, had to contend with snorkelling, which is never dull!.. “I was a little apart from everyone else, but not so far that I didn’t hear the urgency in Dwayne’s voice when he told everyone to dive deep and swim out of the cave. I was a few seconds behind the others and too late to withstand the onrush of water. I was tossed over and over as I was pushed along with the water rushing into the cave…
The alluring islands of the Mu Koh Similan are nothing short of magnificent! This island archipelago encompasses 11 islands and has some of the best snorkelling and diving you will find in Thailand. Most of the islands have a coastline of striking granite boulders which plunge to great depths; balanced precariously atop these are more granite boulders giving the Similans a dramatic picturesque both below and above the waterline. Some islands have beaches of fine white sand, seemingly untouched by human feet… The marine life is quite simply stunning. There is an impressive variety of fish to be found along with turtles, moray eels and so much more. The snorkelling and diving is all the more thrilling due to the colossal boulders that plunge to vast depths, at the water’s edge, turning the Similan underwater world into a labyrinth of caves and swim-throughs – much like an adventure playground.
When it was time to leave Koh Phayam we pulled up the anchor and pushed the accelerator lever into forward. Surprisingly we didn’t move forward; the motor just revved in neutral! We had no forward or reverse. While Dwayne fiddled with the accelerator lever we were, unbeknownst to Brian and Debra, slowly drifting over towards SV Chinook…..
