We arrived in Darwin on the 18th of October, around 1500, after a perfect 17 hour sail. We had been hoping to get to Darwin in time to catch up with our boy Kye who was going to be there for his footy trip. As it happened we beat him there by about five hours. We anchored just out from Stokes Hill Wharf, put the dinghy in and headed to shore to check out some of our old haunts… and some new ones. We headed in to the new waterfront precinct and had a look at the new wave pool. We then stopped at an Irish pub for a cider before heading to Stocks Hill Wharf for dinner. We both had steaks for dinner at Crustaceans on the Wharf. We could hardly eat any of the steak; we filled up too quickly, our bodies are not use to red meat anymore. I ate all the veggies and took the steak home in a doggy bag!
The next morning we caught up with Kye for breakfast in town before he went to watch footy with his teammates. We caught up with my sister Lissy. After a drink at Dinah Beach Yacht Club Lissy and Mia took us to the Mindil markets. Mindil markets have alway been a favourite of ours and many of the same stalls were there. (Mick’s still there with his whips!)
We had yummy food for dinner, I chose some delicious Indonesian satays and Dwayne went a roast pork hock. I don’t know about Dwayne but my stomach was still rebelling against meat and I once again felt uncomfortable, and they were only little satays!
Watched a band play a couple of songs. It was a two-man band. One guy on the drums and one on the didgeridoo . They were really good, great sound!
We went and caught up with Kye at the casino the next day before heading down to the wave pool for a swim.
I decided to do a romantic dinner on the boat. For entree I used some of the crayfish we caught and made a Crayfish Salad with Thai Dressing. If you want to know how I did it check out ‘cooking our catch’ .
Lissy, ever generous, let us borrow her car when we needed it. One day we took advantage of it to visit further afield. So after topping up the fuel we headed out to Humpty Doo to reminisce about packing mangos there in 2004! After a drive around trying to remember where I spent that month sweltering away in the sweat shed we went for lunch at the Humpty Doo Hotel.
Dwayne chose the buffalo burger with the lot. It was delicious but he was disappointed in the size of the buffalo pattie. I ordered the mini burgers (buffalo, crocodile and barra) and definitely got the better deal! The three burgers weren’t that small and were delicious. I had to share my meal with Dwayne as there was too much on the plate for me!
We went out and anchored on a wreck to try fishing for the jewies. The tide was running fast and it took forever to get on the spot…. as you can see from the black squiggly lines in the photo below! Finally we were right were we wanted to be. We pulled in a few smaller fish but not a jewie. We had a great relaxing day tho.
Then the real world came crashing into to our pleasantly mundane life… one of our tenants, yes the one that was behind in rent, decided to up and leave. So I flew back to Adelaide to clean up the mess he left and re-paint the house. I flew at the god awefull time of 0135 and arrived in Adelaide at 0615. Mum picked me up from the airport and it was great to see her again…. 8 months has been too long! Kate then took me out to the house to see what I was up against, it wasn’t that bad, just three years of dust and grime. Anyway to cut a long story short, I clean, painted, bought a new oven and removed all the junk left behind and found a new tenant. I couldn’t have done it without all the help I got from great friends and family.
As a lucky coincidence I was in town for the Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron’s Opening Day. I therefore had a great opportunity to catch up with a bunch of friends from our old club and some family members.
Meanwhile back in Darwin….. Dwayne took a bunch of girls out fishing for the day and then spent a day at the races getting s@*t faced. Oh and he did a bit of work on the boat grinding out the rust spots. He did have the Darwin heat and humidity to deal with… as he keeps pointing out. lol 😃
Dwayne met a bookie, Richard, at the Darwin Turf Club on Melbourne Cup day and when I was back in Darwin we took Richard and his family and friends out for a sunset cruise. Lissy and Mia also joined us. It was a picture perfect night and everyone had a great time.
Dwayne caught some mud crabs while I was away, I look forward seeing what I recipes I can come with for them
We Have been spent a bit of time at the Dinah Beach Yacht Club where, once becoming temporary members, we able to use the facilities, including free wifi. They have cheap drinks and great meals. The salt and pepper bugs were yummy. We picked up our Indonesian visas yesterday, we just refuelled and we are on our way finally…… Indo here we come! We have the kids coming to Bali for Christmas. Can’t wait to see them all, it’s going to be so much fun! With the kids coming to Bali we once again have a dead-line to be somewhere. My New Years resolution this year will be to have no more dead-lines.
